About

Connecting people and resources on land and sea

The North Olympic Peninsula Recompete Coalition includes multiple stakeholders on the Olympic Peninsula with one shared goal: To connect residents to good jobs and invest in projects that will have a lasting positive impact on the economy of the region.

What is Recompete?

Recompete is a pilot program grant through the US Economic Development Administration (EDA) to invest in economically distressed communities. The program targets areas where prime age (25-54) employment falls below the national average. The goal is to close the employment gap through large, flexible investments.

Who do we serve?

As specified by the grant, our primary focus is residents of Clallam and Jefferson Counties, ages 25-54, who are currently not in the workforce. Our goal is to help connect these individuals to good jobs on the Olympic Peninsula.

Our work may include participants outside of these parameters (for example, younger individuals who will be entering this age range during the life cycle of the grant). We are also working with employers to meet workforce needs and assist with hiring and retention.

Who is involved?

Clallam County is coordinating the overall Recompete efforts, but the work is a team effort implemented by numerous public and private partners. The North Olympic Recompete Coalition consists of multiple local governments, tribes, ports, economic development agencies, educational institutions, community-based organizations, and non-profits.

How did we get here?

Industry decline

The forest products and fishing industries declined on the Olympic Peninsula, resulting in job loss and economic depression.

Phase 2 Application

The coalition continued with a second round of applications for Phase 2 of the grant.

Preparation & Programs Begin

Some programs began right away, while the coalition as a whole laid groundwork by hiring staff, getting structures in place, and planning various projects.

Phase 1 Application

A regional coalition led by Clallam County applied for the grant, and from over 500 applications nationwide, we were announced as 1 of 22 finalists for Phase 1.

Awardees announced

Clallam County was announced as 1 of 6 recipients of the grant across the US!
